For a September wedding, custom work is already booked. For October and November, you still have room. Here is the plan I give every bridal client at my Ladner studio, week by week.
Step 1, 12 Weeks Out: Run the Fall Wedding Jewellery Checklist
Start with the pieces you plan to wear: your engagement ring, wedding bands, pearls, family heirlooms, earrings. Look at each one like a stranger would. Are the prongs holding? Is the clasp smooth? Does the ring slide or pinch?
Four quick checks you can do at home:
- The wiggle test: hold the ring near your ear and shake it gently. A loose stone makes a faint rattle.
- The fingernail test: run your nail over each prong tip. It should catch on a point, not slide over a worn flat.
- The clasp test: open and close every clasp on necklaces and bracelets five times. A stiff or soft clasp is the first thing to fail.
- The silk test: lay pearls flat and look for gaps, fraying, or sliding knots between beads.
Pearls deserve a closer look. Silk thread wears out faster than any pearl, and a strand that looks fine can be one sharp pull from scattering. Pearls outlive the silk, so check the thread, not just the beads. If you see gaps between pearls, fraying near the clasp, or knots that slide, book a restring. Step 2, 10 to 8 Weeks Out: Order Custom Pieces
If you are commissioning wedding bands, a custom solitaire, or a redesigned family ring, this is your window. Budget six to ten weeks for design, stone selection, casting, and finishing. Earlier is better, especially in fall, because November and December proposals stack up in the studio.
September weddings can no longer fit custom work. September is too late for a from-scratch piece unless the design is simple. October is borderline and depends on the piece. November is comfortable. If you are unsure, ask at the consult. A straight answer beats a stressful guess.

Step 3, 6 Weeks Out: Resize and Repair
Ring resizing is faster than most people expect. Resizing takes about a week for a straightforward ring, and longer when stones complicate the design. Hand your rings over now, not the week of the wedding.
Do the same for repairs. Prong retipping, clasp replacement, a new catch on a chain, rhodium on white gold. Repair before the final fitting so you have time to wear the piece and notice anything uncomfortable.
Step 4, 4 Weeks Out: Final Fitting and Polish
By now every piece should be back in your hands. Do a full-day ring test: wear the band alone, wear both rings, use your hands normally. Check the necklace clasp against your exact dress neckline. Notice how the ring feels when you pick up a glass or hold hands for photos.
This is also the moment to clean and polish. Have the studio give everything a final shine so the pieces photograph well. A bright ring reads better in close-up shots than a dull one.
Step 5, 1 Week Out: Care and Storage
The week before the wedding, stop handling the jewellery. Store rings in their boxes, never loose in a bag. Keep pearls flat and away from perfume and hairspray. Tissue paper snags silk knots, so wrap pearls in a soft cloth if you pack them for the hotel.
Assign one person, a parent or a bridesmaid, to carry the pieces on the day. One person carries the rings, and everyone else is free to enjoy the morning. That removes the biggest wedding jewellery risk: a ring left behind in a hotel bathroom.
What If Your Wedding Is Sooner Than 12 Weeks?
You still have options. Restringing and resizing are quick, usually a week or two combined. Repairs depend on the job, so ask for a timeline before you commit. What you cannot do is rush custom work without taking on risk. Last-minute fixes are risky, and the wedding day is the wrong place to test a rushed prong. If custom is out of reach for your date, focus on making the pieces you have flawless instead.
